Introducing The Institute for Generational Dialogue

1. The IGD: An Introduction

The Institute for Generational Dialogue (IGD) is a non-profit making organisation (based in Durban, South Africa) with a mandate to advocate generational consciousness to humanity.

2. What is Generational Consciousness?

· Generational Consciousness is an understanding that life in its present configuration is both a product of the past (history) and a seed for the future. And so Generational Consciousness is a collective, intergenerational view of the state of humanity (incorporating past, present and future generations).

· Generational Consciousness speaks of a burden in one generation to equip and prepare its successive generation for future life responsibilities.

‘I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun’ (King Solomon).

3. Why Generational Consciousness?

The 21st century configuration of humanity does suggest that the word ‘generations’ does not exist as a philosophy and consciousness that shapes human or institutional behaviour and operations. This is seen by the general collapse of parenting and a general lack of generational succession at all levels of humanity (e.g. society, government, business etc.). This necessitates for generational consciousness to be advocated so that humanity can discover generational collaboration as well as progressive civilisation & development.

4. IGD Vision

So therefore the vision of the IGD is to transform the word ‘generations’ into consciousness in order to achieve life exchange, dialogue & collaboration between older-outgoing and young-emerging generations, resulting in progressive civilisation for humanity.

5. IGD Propositions

· Hard work without succession is futility.
· It is good to know the condition of your successor, it is even better to shape the condition of your successor.
· Parenting is not just a chronological status or a product of biological blessing, but a responsibility and skill to prepare the emerging generation for its future responsibilities.
· The Education System cannot be seen only as a tool for producing skilled human resource but must be seen primarily as a catalyst for generational succession & progressive human civilisation.
· Business is of the people (shareholders) for people (customers), run through people (employees) by people (managers); and so therefore if the human is a central element of a business process then business sustainability goes beyond strategy, skill and technology to include, at a very basic level, the critical issue of generational succession.
· An effective political process is one that strikes a balance between dealing with current conditions of humanity and the need for a stable future, to such an extent that it is celebrated by future generations – and so at the centre of an effective political process is generational consciousness.
· If Africa is going to sustain this Age of Development, then Generational Consciousness and not Institutionalism, is going to have to be the driving philosophy of the political, socio-economic process.

6. The Mandate of the IGD

The mandate of the IGD is:

· To establish generational consciousness (through advocacy).
· To resource young emerging generations for their future life responsibilities (through education and training programmes).
· To build inter-generational intelligence (through research focused on conditions of past & present generations, as well as emerging trends shaping the state of future generations).
· To facilitate strategic dialogue (e.g. conferences) between old-outgoing and young-emerging generations in order to achieve collaborative wisdom that can be used in various areas (i.e. social, economic & political) of human and institutional development.

7. The Operations (or services) of the IGD

The operations of the IGD are:

· Advocacy through public lectures, workshops and media.
· Education & training programmes focused at young emerging generations (youth).
· Research aimed at supplying intelligence to leaders, society and institutions as they shape the direction of humanity & institutions.
· Strategic facilitation of dialogue between older-outgoing and younger-emerging generations through conferences, workshops etc. with the objective of building collaborative wisdom for the development of humanity.

8. IGD Focus Areas

The subject of Generational Consciousness is very broad; there is hardly any aspect of humanity that has no generational relevance. As such, the focus areas of the IGD range from:

· Social issues, specifically including the family unit, parenting and education.
· Economic & Business issues, specifically including economic policies and their effect on the future, business administration (business models and their compliance to generational demands) as well as business evolution.
· Political and Governance issues, specifically including the scope of the political process and governance (i.e. is it based on the philosophy of immediacy or is it generational in nature?).
9. IGD Leadership

The leadership structure of the IGD comprises of the senate, executive leadership and management.

The IGD has three senators who are responsible for administering its visionary framework; these senators are:

· Robert M. Ntuli, who also serves as a senior leadership officer within the organisation. He has a tertiary educational background in politics and economics as well as a corporate background in the area of marketing. Robert has a particular burden to see humanity enjoy progressive civilisation.
· Brian T. Ngiba, who has a tertiary educational background in accounting; Brian is currently working in a tertiary educational environment and has an experience as an educator.
· Perfect N. Chiliza, who also has a tertiary educational background in accounting. Perfect is currently working in a municipal environment and has experience in the area of financial management.

10. IGD & Organisational Partnership

In pursuing its vision, the IGD shall partner with other like-minded organisations with similar objectives as those of the IGD.

I am one of similar mindset and am greatly inspired by the initiative conducted by IGD, particularly in awakening the conscience of various generations to partner up to take foward the development of the African continent.
